Coaching Review - Ryan Downey

The main reason I decided to join AP (Andy Potts) Racing was to get a different coaching approach. I felt like I had plateaued a bit in my training and wanted something different in order to get a bit faster in all disciplines for a busy 2022 season that had 2 Half Ironmans and 2 Full Ironmans on the calendar. Different is what I definitely got through the Pottshead+ program and it was what I needed that led to a fairly successful 2022 that included a 5th place podium finish at IM Alaska and 10th at IM Arizona. All of my disciplines improved, but most notably, I was stronger and improved the most on the bike and run.
The rides and runs were different in the way AP approached the workouts. I was used to very specific percentages of FTP and threshold for the bike and run. AP is focused on your Zones and gives you the flexibility within those zones for your workouts. For instance, if you have a bike workout that calls for 5 min at Zone 3, you can determine if that is low, middle, or high in that zone based upon how you feel that day and your previous workload. Sometimes right at the beginning of Zone 3 was good for me and other times I could muster the strength to go middle to higher in the zone (just don’t always go for the low end in the zone). Same thing for the run and swim as well.
Also on the workouts, it would state low end zone or build within the zone within the interval. Getting to know my zones versus specific percentage targets was a bit of an adjustment, but like anything, you dial it in and get to know them. My plan was adjusted every quarter and I was able to get in almost 100% of my workouts every week but often times I would move them around day to day to adjust to life stuff- no problem at all. I’m a guy that prefers to have my plan/workouts laid out for me and then it’s up to me to execute it and that’s exactly what AP Racing gave me. I’m continuing to have them coach me through less busy 2023 race schedule with a focus on sharpening the blade to setup for a 2024 that could be busy If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask! -Ryan
